Summer is finally here, and I am excited about it! Things are much better here in the United States, with more people comfortable going out in small groups. The summer will make way for some of our favorite activities, like picnics, weekend trips, or even long vacations again.

Some of us are excited for the summer of 2021 because it means planning great outdoor activities and parties and barbecues with family and friends. However, just because we are going back to parties and gatherings doesn’t mean we need to fall into the trap of what some consider “party food”- junk, sweets, and food that is bad for us.

Instead, we can fill our summertime get-togethers with food and drinks that taste great and are healthy for everyone.

Healthy Summer Drinks

Nothing refreshes you on a hot summer day like a nice cool drink.

Sodas, either diet or regular, are unhealthy for your body, and end up dehydrating you. Instead, if you are going to socialize, especially outside, you need drinks that will hydrate you while also quenching your thirst.

You can make delicious fruit smoothies with coconut water, ice and add pineapple, apple, strawberry, banana, kiwi, blueberry, grapes, mango, or fruits that you love, and blend it. You can add flax or chia seeds as a source of Good Fat (Omega3 & 6) and you have a tasty and refreshing drink!

Healthy Summer Snacks

Dips and vegetables make great snacks for a party. They are easy to eat, fill you up, and are still incredibly healthy.

You can make hummus dip or buy great hummus from Costco or Trader Joe’s and eat it with vegetables like celery sticks, baby carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, and tomatoes. Want a spicier snack? Add some cayenne pepper and garlic with sea salt and parsley.

You can also make a fresh dip using avocado, lemon, sea salt, cumin powder, and some green chili for spice.

Want to serve mini-sandwiches? Toast the bread, cut in half, and use the spread on the bread, alongside tomatoes, cucumber, romaine lettuce. Want a heartier lunch for yourself?  Steam a potato, and put slices of the cooked potato on the sandwich.

I take these sandwiches often when I’m flying so I have something healthy to eat on the plane instead of junk food. This sandwich also works nicely for picnics, lakeside, or for a beach snack.

Want more plant-based sandwiches? Watch my video here for more ideas for healthy, gluten-free sandwiches.

Hosting a BBQ? Put vegetables on skewers and grill. You can also make baked potato or sweet potato with corn on the outdoor grill for a sweet and tasty side or main dish.

Nothing tastes as refreshing on a hot day as a nice, cool, and healthy salad. Use sunflower or pumpkin seeds and make the dressing and add lemon, onion, and garlic powder.

When you consider how to eat healthy during summer parties, stick to remembering your WHY

I can tell you WHY for me: I want to live up to 130 years and be healthy with lots of creative energy, so I can serve my mission and the people around me. That’s what brings me fulfillment and joy. I want to be around my kids, grandkids, and travel around the world having a honeymoon with my wife of course!
